Why Walking Changed Everything for Me
Nine months ago, I could barely get myself out the door. No walking, no energy. I felt stiff, heavy, and stuck.
Fast forward to today: I’m doing morning walks of up to 7.5 kilometers along the coastline. My dream is that maybe one day I’ll even run again. But here’s the thing — what I discovered from simply walking has surprised me more than I ever thought.
Walking at sunrise has become more than exercise. It sets the tone for my day. At a brisk pace, my heart gets working, circulation improves, and I feel my body warming up and loosening. It’s gentle on the joints, but still builds strength and stamina.
The benefits go beyond physical. The rhythm of my steps, the sound of the waves, and the morning light calm my mind. Stress drops away, I get clarity, and ideas often come during these walks. The fresh air and sunlight also reset my body clock — I sleep better and wake up with more steady energy.
Mark Sisson, the health author I follow, says walking is the most natural movement we can do. We are “born to walk.” It’s low impact but high benefit. It helps burn fat, keeps hormones in balance, builds resilience, and even boosts brain health by stimulating BDNF — a factor that helps keep the brain young and sharp.
What I love is that walking doesn’t break you down. It builds you up slowly, step by step, day by day. It’s sustainable. You can do it for life. And along the way it lifts mood, lowers inflammation, helps manage appetite, and gives a real sense of freedom.
For me, walking has become a foundation. It’s where health, focus, and calm begin. Running may still be a dream for me, but I’ve learned the walk itself is already the reward.
